I have recently made changes to the Three-Dot Tablet [TDT], so I decided to drop this Web-Only reference point for anyone who was curious. The blurbs below are pulled from other posts, and modified for space here…
To Paywall, Or To Not Paywall: The Balance
I have talked before about my desire to keep as much of The Stone Age open to all readers as possible, whilst still providing value to paid Members. This balancing act is one with which I have seen other writers struggle here - I have as well - but the format of the TDT allows me an opportunity to strive for that balance.
As such, from here forward each edition of the TDT will be a split drop. The first segment (know as the ‘Prime Cut’) will be available for all to read in its entirety (I absolutely hate it when I hit a paywall in the middle of an article), while the rest of the stories will be exclusively for paid Members. This allows me to offer content for free subscribers, while giving additional value to those who are paid Members.
On Comment Limitations
One of the many limitations which are built into the Substack platform is how you can control who gets to comment. For example, anytime a portion of a post is for paid Members - even when a large part of it is also for public viewing (like is now the case with the TDT), the author only has two options for comments: Turn them off entirely… or allow them for ‘paid subscribers’ exclusively; there is no option for allowing everyone to comment with posts of this nature.
When those are your only choices? You almost HAVE to choose the latter.
So, for the foreseeable future, the only readers who will be able to comment on editions of the TDT will be paid Members. The ability to comment on all other posts will still be open for everyone, of course, (it has never been my intention to limit who can comment), but with the TDT? If I am going to move forward with my plan, I literally have other choice in the matter.
Due to limitations which are built into the Substack platform, anytime a portion of a drop is for paid Members the author only gets TWO options for comments: Turn comments off entirely… or allow them for ‘paid subscribers’ exclusively. As such, the TDT - again, I have no choice here - will be limited to paid Members only. The ability to comment on all other posts will still be open for everyone.
More to come, as updates are needed…
