(Over $700 in some places). Your average hen lays between 25 to 30 eggs per month. And eats about 6 pounds of feed per month. Thus, the cost per egg ranges from about $1.79 to $2.15 depending on the actual egg product. And they give you a crummy looking chicken coop.
On the other hand if you purchase a chicken coop for between $100-$200 and purchase your own feed at $25 for a 50 pound bag. It’s going to cost you about $1.12 an egg — after amortizing your chicken coop investment.
Once your chicken coop has been paid for the cost per egg is reduced to approximately $.12 an egg!
You are not saving a dime by renting a chicken coop, feed and 2 hens! That’s called getting fleeced!
We homestead, and my DIL has the brilliant idea charge people to incubate eggs from our chickens. It’s a brilliant plan because, even though she is good at the incubation process, you can never guarantee how many chicks will hatch nor can you guarantee you can sell all the chicks that do hatch if you charge just for chicks. She charges $35 for half an incubator and $60 for a full incubator. And they pay no matter how many hatch. There’s no food cost involved, just the cost for electricity and then the vigilance of keeping the humidity right in the incubator. I’m proud of her!
IMHO the greatest aspect of this service is that you can use it for a six-month test drive to see if this is your thing or not.
