But we effectively haven’t been much a “constitutional republic” in several decades, in fact, we’ve been much closer to being a centralized technocratic dictatorship. I agree that we were not set up as, nor were we ever, what I take it that your implying the definition of democracy is. But we did indeed used to be a semi-populist, semi-politically decentralized, semi-economically decentralized, semi-culturally decentralized, and semi scientifically decentralized republic with high imperfect yet still meaningfully democratic governance structures based around our former, and completely different than today’s parties, decentralized and publicly accessible Democratic and Republican parties of old. So while we may not have been a democracy we were still none the less much more democratic

I’ve never in my life seen such brutal attacks on the constitution from office holders sworn to uphold said document, many of whom have law degrees, along with the press, whose sole existence is provided for by the first amendment.

Our constitutional republic is suffering from a thousand cuts, and still hanging on, yet perhaps we are at that “keep it if you can” point in history.
