When hurricane helene came through my area in Tennessee, I had no interest and very limited cell service for a week. Every bit of information I could get was from my little emergency weather radio. I wholeheartedly agree everyone should have one. I'm not sure I agree on the voice being soothing or even non irritating. 😅
LOL Well, I reckon the 'smoothness' of the voice is up to everyone's individual tastes ;-) I still have a memory of the first voice they used, however, and compared it the one they use now? In movie terms, it's like the difference between 'Sharknado' and 'The Godfather' :-D
I just bought two, one for my house and one as a Christmas gift for my millennial son and his wife. I look forward to their confused reaction to this ancient tech. :)
I have to admit, when dangerous weather approaches, my first thought is to grab the HAM radio and tune into the emergency weather station. I used to have a weather radio… I think it’s time for a new one. Thanks for the reminder!
Thank you Stone! Valuable news here! I'm hoping to receive my ham radio license this upcoming year! I have a home course I'm taking if anyone wants information.
I too have a long time interest (some have called it an obsession) with the weather, so I can fully relate to your topic.
I was a bit surprised you didn't mention having a programmable VHF/UHF transceiver (Baofeng is a popular, and inexpensive brand, albeit from China). These radios allow you to not only listen to NWR, local emergency services FM radio and most bands of the HAM radio system, but they also allow you to use them to transmit on the FRS (no license) and GRMS (simple license, more or less a registration) bands. And, they are very inexpensive, often sold in pairs for $40-$100. Very handy tools for rural life, hikes, mountain bike trips, or heck, maybe even a shopping trip to some dreaded mall.
PS: Here is the link to all the WX broadcast channels by location.
I considered loading up on additional info about FRS / GRMS and expanding the discussion about HAM, but figured that might be a bit much for someone new to radio outside the FM band. I plan to expand upon those in a later post.
With that noted - the station-list guide was a complete miss on my part! I am planning to repost this, as part of a off-site project, and will make sure to include that list in the update.
I keep reading about these, there’s a a lot of people who swear by this in the event of an emergency. Also I think that anyone who is ready to tell the powers that be fuck off should have one of these if things go south. Not only for the safety of our own families but if theirs a chance we can help save another in the event of an emergency I think this is a really good investment. I want one for my family.
And yeah, Internet reviews tend to blow these days - they are either paid-for by the manufacturer, or written by trolls who enjoy making people miserable.
As for the three radios I featured here, I can comfortably recommend each :-)

Thanks for the great comment!
I had one a long time ago, pre-internet. I didn’t know they’re still available. Thanks!
Happy to help :-)

Absolutely, happy to help. Hopefully you'll never NEED it, but if you do... it'll be ready for ya :-)
Thanks for the information about a weather radio. I thought we were had everything, but I don't think we have one of these. Good information to have.
Happy to help, in any way I can :-)

Appreciate you pointing that out!
There may come a time in the very near future that this is how the resistance communicates. Damn the man!!
